Getting a Mirror Finish on Aircraft Skins with IR Curing
Ever deal with “orange peel” on a plane? It’s a nightmare. Usually, it happens because of how convection ovens work. They heat the air, which then heats the skin. The problem is that the surface dries way too fast, trapping bubbles underneath and leaving the paint looking bumpy. It’s frustrating. We do things differently. We use custom shortwave infrared (SWIR) heaters that go straight through the paint film. Heating from the bottom up Here is the trick: SWIR radiation doesn’t care about the air. It targets the molecules inside the coating itself. Instead of baking the top layer first, the heat starts at the substrate and pushes upward. This means the solvent evaporates from the bottom up, giving the paint plenty of time to flow and flatten out before the surface sets. The result? A mirror-like finish. You just can’t get that with a standard oven because the paint stays fluid across the whole layer for longer. Dealing with massive, curved airframes You can’t just buy a lamp off the shelf and expect it to work on a fuselage. Aircraft are huge and full of awkward curves. We build custom quartz tubes with specific wattage densities to make sure the heat is even everywhere. If you go too hot in one spot, you’ll scorch the paint. Too low, and you’re left with patches that aren’t cured. It’s all about hitting that perfect temperature window. The trade-offs (the “gotchas”) Now, it’s not all magic. There are a few things you have to watch out for. First, these high-intensity arrays pull a lot of power. Your electrical setup needs to be ready for that initial surge when the lamps kick in, or you’ll have a bad day. Then there’s the cleaning. Since SWIR creates such intense heat, your reflectors have to be spotless. A little bit of dust or a smudge of oil on the gold or aluminum can create “hot spots.” That leads to uneven curing or, worse, a burnt-out tube. One last tip: wire your systems into zoned control loops. The fuselage and the wings have different thicknesses, so you’ll want to be able to tweak the heat for each section.
