
How to actually hang your infrared heaters without ruining your ceiling
If you’re putting infrared heaters in a spot where people are constantly moving—like a changing room or a locker area—you’ve got to get the spacing right. It’s a bit of a balancing act. You want the room to feel cozy, but you don’t want to accidentally melt your ceiling. Here is the thing about infrared: it doesn’t just warm up the air. It sends out waves of energy that hit people and objects directly. It’s a different beast entirely.
Give your ceiling some breathing room
Whatever you do, don’t mount your heater flush against the ceiling. If you do, you’re basically creating a heat trap. That trapped energy builds up and, before you know it, your ceiling starts to warp or discolor. Not a great look. Depending on how much power your unit has, you’ll want to leave about 18 to 36 inches of space. Shortwave heaters are the fast ones. They hit you with warmth the second you step under them. But because they’re so intense, the housing gets hot. If you’re trying to turn a freezing locker room into a sanctuary instantly, just make sure your ceiling is made of something that won’t catch fire or is treated with a heat-resistant coating.
The height trade-off
There’s a bit of a tug-of-war when it comes to where you mount the unit. If you put the heater 10 feet up, you cover a lot more ground. More people get warm. But the downside? You lose that “instant” punch of heat. A heater at 7 feet feels much more powerful, but it only warms a small spot. To get that high-end, five-star warmth in a big room, you have to look at the total BTU output versus how high your ceilings are. You can’t just guess.
A few things to double-check
If you’re the one handling the install, keep these in mind: **Watch your wiring.**If you’re running cables over long distances, check for voltage drop. You don’t want a heater that barely puts out a glow because the wire is too long. **Check your brackets.**These things have weight. Use brackets that can actually hold the unit so it doesn’t start sagging and looking sloppy after a few months. **Think about the environment.**If it’s a humid room, go with IP-rated enclosures. They’ll last way longer. And for heaven’s sake, leave enough room to actually get to the heater. Eventually, the lamps will burn out. You don’t want to be fighting a wall or a beam just to swap out a bulb.
