
Why we’re swapping out old bathroom lamps for IP55 infrared heaters
If you’ve ever had one of those old-school halogen “light-warmers” in your bathroom, you know the drill. They work for a while, and then—pop—they’re dead. The problem is simple: bathrooms are wet. Steam and moisture sneak into the housing, fry the circuitry, and leave you shivering in a cold room. That’s exactly why we’ve started moving toward IP55-rated infrared heaters.
What’s the deal with “IP55”?
Basically, it means the unit is built to handle a mess. Between the thick steam from a hot shower and the occasional direct splash, a standard lamp just isn’t cut out for the job. We seal these infrared units tight so water can’t reach the wiring or the heating element. It stops the corrosion that usually kills those cheap heaters in under a year. It’s just a smarter way to build things for a wet room.
The magic of infrared
Here is the best part: traditional lamps try to heat up the air around you. Infrared is different. It sends out waves that warm you and the surfaces you’re touching. You flip the switch and you feel it instantly. No waiting around for the room to warm up. Because we use short-wave emitters, these units don’t need to be huge to pack a serious punch of heat.
A few things to keep in mind
Now, it’s not just a “plug and play” situation. There are a couple of things you need to get right. First, these draw more power than a light bulb. You’ll want to make sure your wiring can handle the wattage so you aren’t overheating your conduits. Also, they’re a bit heavier than the old lamps, so make sure your ceiling mounts are sturdy enough to hold the extra weight. One last tip: if you’re putting one of these in a tiny, enclosed shower stall, that radiant heat can build up fast. You’ll definitely want a good exhaust fan running to keep things from getting too hot in there. It’s a small trade-off. You get that instant, dry warmth, you just have to keep the air moving.
