
Why we obsess over IP55 for our patio heaters
Let’s be honest: the outdoors are brutal. Between the random rain showers, the morning mist, and the dust that seems to get into everything, your outdoor gear is basically in a constant fight for survival. When it comes to infrared heaters, moisture is the enemy. If water hits the heating element or sneaks into the wiring, things go south quickly. That’s why we build our units to the IP55 standard.
What does IP55 actually mean for you?
In plain English? It means your heater can handle the elements. If the wind kicks up some rain or you’re dealing with a foggy morning, the unit won’t blink. We use tight gaskets and sealed cable entries to keep the insides bone-dry. It’s a simple fix, but it makes a huge difference. Without those seals, moisture creeps in, causes short circuits, and eats away at the electrical terminals. By locking the water out, we make sure your heater actually lasts for years instead of just one season.
Fighting the “silent killer”
There’s something called condensation, and it’s a nightmare for infrared lamps. Imagine a scorching hot lamp cooling down in a damp environment. Fog forms on the quartz tube. If that moisture pools in one spot, it creates a “hot spot.” When the lamp heats up again, that spot can cause the glass to crack. Not ideal. To stop this, we tweaked the shape of the housing and the way air flows through the unit. It keeps the glass clear and the temperature even. Plus, we coated the whole chassis in a rust-resistant finish. Because nobody wants a heater that looks like an old shipwreck after a few heavy storms.
A few things to keep in mind
Now, there’s a trade-off. To keep the water out, we have to seal things up tight, which means the unit can’t “breathe” as easily as an indoor heater would. **Here is the trick:**make sure you leave enough space around the unit when you mount it. If it’s crammed too close to a wall or ceiling, the internal electronics can get a bit too toasty. And just a heads-up—IP55 is great for splashes and rain, but it’s not a submarine. Please don’t blast it with a high-pressure power washer. Over time, that kind of pressure will wear down the seals. Just mount it at the right height, give it some breathing room, and you’re good to go.
