If you’re running infrared heat lamps in a damp spot—think brooding areas or those high-humidity wash-down zones—you’ve probably worried about a short circuit. It’s a valid fear. When water vapor sneaks into the housing, it creates a bridge between the live terminals and the chassis. That’s a recipe for disaster. You need a setup that shuts down leakage current before it even starts. The problem with humidity Here’s the thing: moisture doesn’t just hang out on the outside. It migrates. In a wet room, condensation builds up right inside the lamp socket. If you’re using basic connectors, that moisture turns into a conductive path. We deal with this by using hermetically sealed gaskets and high-dielectric potting compounds. Basically, we’re locking the electrical junctions away from the air entirely. No air, no moisture, no shorts. The gear that actually works To get that total insulation, we have to look at the gap between components. We use reinforced ceramic insulators because they don’t soak up water. Plastic is great for some things, but it tends to melt under high wattage. Ceramics? They hold their own. Then there’s the wiring. We stick with silicone-insulated leads. Silicone is a beast—it handles the searing heat of the lamp and the dampness of the room without cracking. And that’s huge, because a tiny crack in the insulation is all it takes to trigger a ground fault. The honest trade-off Now, let’s be real. Total waterproofing comes with a catch. You can’t just “pop” a bulb out for a two-second swap. Since these units are sealed tight, you’ll either need to replace the whole fixture or dig out a specialized tool kit to break the seal.
